What is soffit and fascia, what is their purpose and how can they update my exteriors look?
So what is a fascia board?
The fascia board is basically where the roof meets the outer wall of the house or at the very end of the roof. This is sometimes referred as the roofline. But most people refer to it as the fascia board. The fascia usually does all the work of supporting the lower edge of the bottom row of tiles. Fascia also carries all the guttering.
What is a soffit?
This is usually tucked under the fascia board and you can usually see this from the street level. It can also be ventilated to allow air flow into the work area. Ventilation can also be provided on the top of the fascia board as well. If you don’t have proper ventilation, condensation could form in the roof increasing the risk of timber decay.
Why are they important?
They help keep out pests and unwanted guests from getting into your homes. This includes bats, birds and squirrels. It is also a nice way to disguise ventilation for your attic. While most homeowners choose to have theres made of wood, more and more homeowners now a days are choosing to have theres made of synthetic and composite materials such as UPVC and vinyl because they offer easy maintenance and durability.
Keep this in mind
• Use a soft brush or broom and apply a cleaning product made with bleach is you do discover mold or mildew on your soffit
• Once in a while it is a good idea to check for bee, hornets and wasps nest. By all means, if your not comfortable with getting up on a latter and taking care of it yourself, please call a professional!
• If you plan on installing the fascia yourself it helps to cut the pieces a tad longer so you can overlap the joints.
